Why this course is important:
Bank Management Simulation (BMS) is an interactive computer bank management simulation designed to provide you with experience in managing a bank and using all of the skills that you have learned in your previous years at GSBC. It is intended to be a capstone course for third year students.
Students take on the role of a senior management team at a commercial bank, immersing themselves in the group dynamics and leadership skills required to manage a financial institution in a competitive and ever-changing economic environment. Throughout the experience, they develop critical competencies in leadership, goal setting, consensus building, asset/liability management, interest rate risk management, and economics and financial analysis.
BMS emphasizes the importance of translating policy and goals into effective strategies while honing skills in team dynamics, decision making and consensus building. Students also gain practical experience in optimizing the balance sheet and income statement, managing interest rate risk and navigating within complex regulatory frameworks, all of which are critical to leading a successful and resilient community banking institution.
Key takeaways of this course:
- Gaining appreciation for the bank’s management team given the number and impact of decisions they are required to make on an ongoing basis.
- Understanding of how Balance Sheet composition, Growth, Rate Sensitivity Pricing decisions impact the Income Statement and risk profile of the bank.
- The concept of balancing growth objectives with earnings retention and capital.
- Recognition of importance and value of each team member of your organization in order to meet all goals relating to safety and soundness, balance sheet funding for loans and investments at a profitable level, adequate capitalization and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
